Growing Hops

It's spring and that means the start of hop growing season! Some of you might already grow hops and some of you might be thinking about growing hops. In this post, I'll be discussing raising hops at home. This isn't information based on some randomness that's been passed down in homebrew lore over the years or designed for commercial growers. This is all firsthand experience growing hops at home over many years and learning what works and what doesn't.

How to Transplant Hops

Things you’ll need:

• Hops to be transplanted (sort of a no brainer)
• A shovel (given the size of the root networks, you’ll need something big)
• Your hands (they’re gonna get dirty, so plan ahead)
• A new place for the hops (see the first item of the list)
• Some extra topsoil (I had some left over from summer planting)
• A beer (I chose Troegs HopBack Amber because hop back. Get it!? I need help.)

"The Pacific Northwest is an optimal location for hop production due to its unique terroir and irrigation resources.  Specifically, the Willamette Valley's rich soil, mild climate, and abundant rainfall provide ideal conditions for commercial hop production.  The moderate temperatures experienced during the growing season are particularly favorable for growing high quality aroma-type hops. Several alpha-type varieties also favor the Oregon climate and consistently yield higher than average harvests."

Oregon Hop Growers proudly grow many different hop varieties and are adding and expanding new varieties each year. Below is a list of the varieties found in Oregon:
